Preparing for treatment

The gap between the decision and the first treatment is not wasted time — several of the things done then make the rest of the course smoother.

Before treatment begins

Between the decision and the first treatment there is usually a short preparation period. It is not wasted time: several of the things done in it make the rest of the course smoother.

Fertility — a conversation that happens early

If you are of reproductive age, the effect of treatment on fertility must be discussed before it starts, not afterwards. Fertility preservation options exist, but most of them need to happen in good time.

This applies to men and women alike. If nobody raises it, raise it yourself — it is one of the few things that cannot be undone if the moment passes.

Practical steps

  • Dental check — before some treatments it is advisable to deal with any source of infection.
  • Medication review — some medicines, supplements or herbal products interact with treatment. Mention everything, including what you assume is harmless.
  • Vaccinations — some are advised before starting, while others should be avoided during. Ask what applies to you.
  • Venous access — for some regimens a central line or port is placed, which makes treatments easier and protects the veins.

Organise the practicalities

Think in advance about getting to and from hospital, particularly on treatment days, since you may not feel up to driving. If you work, discuss what adjustments are possible. If you have young children or care for someone, arrange support for the heavier days.

Most people find there is a repeating pattern within each cycle — some days harder, others almost normal. Once you recognise it, planning becomes much easier.

Frequently asked questions

Can I continue the medication I already take?

In most cases yes, but this is checked drug by drug. Do not stop anything on your own, and do not start anything new — supplements included — without mentioning it.

Should I change my diet before starting?

No special diet is needed. What helps is starting in as good a nutritional state as possible — which usually means adequate protein and regular meals, not restrictions.
